Special Requirements and Information:
An unusual
but healthy addition to your tank. Sea Squirts
are filter feeders and the actual animal is
inside. What you see is a covering that protects
the sea squirt and functions to bring in and
export the water column. The capture their food
using cilia and many have a symbiotic
relationship with algae. It's an asexual animal
that breeds tadpole-like young that move around
the tank and either find an area to latch onto,
get pulled into the pump (or overflow) or are
[of course] eaten by others in the reef system.
While this is irrelevant to the aquarist, tunicates are being
explored for their medicinal possibilities -
including anti-cancer properties.
