Special Requirements and Information:
Seahorses are
some of the most beautiful and exotic looking
fish. As most know, the males carry the young in
their pouch and spit them out of the pouch
during birth. The mating dance alone is a reason
to have them.
Since the industry has begun to tank-raise them
they are better suited for captivity. In the
wild they will not eat anything that does not
move. Training them to eat frozen foods is a
complicated process and not always successful.
The young seldom survive.
They require a tank that's at lest three times
the full adult height because the swim
vertically and need the tank height during the
mating process. Since their fins are small -
they are slow and do not compete well for food
so keeping them in a tank specific to them
and/or pipefish if preferential. You will also
need vertical corals or rocks/accessories for
them. They hang on by wrapping their tails
around items to help them stay in place and
shoot their upper body and head forward to catch
food.
